The Sacrament of (First) Reconciliation By Ms. Teresa Elligson, with Mrs. Marie Lybolt   All children who plan on preparing for the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist must first complete the preparation program for First Reconciliation.  The preparation for First Reconciliation must be distinct and separate from the preparation for First Eucharist. It is the responsibility of the parent(s) to give the immediate preparation for this Sacrament.  The Religious Education Office will provide the text, parent information, videos and any other assistance needed.  A materials fee ($30.00 payable at the parent meeting) helps defray the cost of the program. Program Components 1. The family must be registered members of St. Joseph Parish. 2. Each child is usually in the 2nd grade AND has reached the “age of reason” (7 years old) to begin sacramental preparation. The child has been baptized in the Catholic Church. 3. The child must have completed one year of a parish/school religious education program and be currently enrolled. 4. The child prays and attends Mass each Saturday/Sunday with the family. 5. The parent(s) must attend the scheduled Parent Meeting where registration takes place. 6. The parent uses the provided Reconciliation workbook with the child at home. 7. Each child, accompanied by his/her parent(s), attends the Reconciliation workshop. 8. The child celebrates the Sacrament of Reconciliation at the specially scheduled Reconciliation Service. (Other opportunities for this Sacrament are also provided.) 9. If, after completing the preparation program for Reconciliation, the parent(s) feel that their child is not ready to receive this Sacrament, they are to discuss – in person – with the Director of Religious Education, the School Principal or one of the parish priests, why the child is not ready. 10. Please notify the Religious Education Office of the date/place of First Reconciliation if celebrated outside of the First Reconciliation Service. Program Structure 1. Parent Meeting 2. Workshop 3.
