What is Alpha?

Alpha is an opportunity to explore life and the Christian faith, in a friendly, open and informal environment. It is not so much a course, but an experience! Gathering once a week, Alpha brings together people from every walk of life. We share a meal together, we listen to a talk, and then we gather together in small groups for discussion.

Who is Alpha for?

Alpha is for anyone who has questions about the meaning of life, anyone who would like to know more about Jesus Christ, or anyone who wonders why church matters. The beauty of Alpha is that there are no questions that are too hostile, too silly, or too simple. Alpha has no prerequisites whatsoever. We come together with one another as we are, free to be ourselves. Anyone can benefit from Alpha because no assumptions are made about a person’s level of knowledge, understanding, or engagement with Christianity. Alpha is also available in Spanish.

What does Alpha look like?

We share a meal together, we listen to a talk that makes you think, and then we gather together in small groups for even better conversation.

Is Alpha for me?

Alpha sessions can reinvigorate active Catholics as it sparks a deeper level of faith and a richer personal relationship with Jesus Christ and what it means to be his disciple. Thus we are enabled to better talk about our faith and invite others to come on this journey with us.

Why are we doing Alpha here at St. Joseph parish?

As stated in our parish Strategic Plan, St. Joseph Parish is a Beacon in our community of Faith, Worship, and Witness.  Each parishioner is vital to this call of discipleship.  Alpha has as its ultimate goal to be a welcoming and non-judgmental place where the unchurched, non-Christian and those who have fallen away from the church can take the next step in their faith journey.

What am I committed to if I join Alpha?

Alpha is an 11-week process and includes an off-campus day retreat.  Come to the first session—have a free meal and conversation with us.  Hopefully, you will want to continue, but we will understand if this is not the right “fit” for you at this time.  If you must miss a session, the video will be forwarded to you to view at home.  But of course, our conversation is the very best part of this process.

How do I register?

There is no fee for Alpha. We ask for a $25 fee if you join us for the off-campus retreat.

Prayer

Alpha is perfectly designed to fail unless God shows up.”

One of the most important roles in Alpha is people who will pray to the Holy Spirit before, during, and after each Alpha. St. Joseph Parish’s first Alpha will begin on Wednesday, September 25 and run through December 11 with a retreat on Saturday, November 16.  We encourage all parishioners to raise this Alpha in prayer, asking God to be with us.
